Cat Health: Grooming

When learning about cat health, grooming is an important subject. You may not think that felines need grooming, but they do. While cats are good at washing themselves, they are going to need your help as well. Giving your cat a bath is something you may want to do every so often. When you first bring your feline home, a bath may be a good idea. You will find a wide variety of kitten and cat shampoos on the market. Most cats don't like the water, so bathing may be challenging.

Recruit a helper and get all your supplies ready ahead of time. One person should hold the cat by the scruff of the neck while the other one bathes and rinses. The faster you work, the better. You may want to wear gloves to prevent being scratched. Once your cat is washed and rinsed, wrap it in a warm, fluffy towel and rub the fur briskly. After towel drying, brush your cat gently. Most cats will want to run away and hide after a bath. Luckily you will not need to bathe your cat for a very long time, especially if they live indoors. If you don't want to use water, there are waterless dry shampoos that can be used.

Brushing is something you should do on a regular basis. Shorthaired cats won't need as much brushing as longhaired cats. Longhaired cats should be brushed every day. Use a comb to detangle any mats found in the fur. If you brush and comb your cat daily you should be able to head off mats before they occur. You may want to use a conditioning spray to add sheen and help make brushing easier. These sprays also add a pleasant fragrance. When brushing your cat, check the ears to make sure they're clean and free of dirt and mites.

If your cat's ears are dirty, the vet can give you drops to administer. Simply drop one or two drops in each ear and massage the ears gently. You may also need to trim your cat's claws periodically. There are special clippers made for this purpose. Make sure not to trim too far as this will cause profuse bleeding. If you do cut into the vessel and your cat's claw bleeds, apply styptic powder to the wound to stop the bleeding. While cat health grooming issues are not as pressing as other cat health issues, it is still important to keep your feline properly groomed.
