Maintaining Elderly Cat Health

Elderly cat health is an issue you will need to confront once your feline reaches ten years of age. An older cat may develop particular health issues or require special care to maintain their vitality after they reach a certain age. This does not mean that an older cat cannot be healthy and happy. On the contrary, cats can be happy and active through their entire lives if given the right care. The average life span of a cat is around 17 years of age. Some cats may live longer, some may live not as long. It all depends on genetics, breed and care.

Older cats may be less active than younger cats. This is natural. Your cat may laze around more and get less exercise. Some cats, even young ones, are lazy by nature. If your older cat experiences a decline in activity, they may lose muscle and become stiff and achy. Another common problem is a reduction in the sharpness of the senses. Some senior cats can't smell or taste as well as they once could. To remedy this problem, try adding a flavored gravy supplement with a strong aroma to their food or giving them a vitamin every day. There are also supplements that help your cat's bones, muscles and joints stay healthy and strong.

Feeding your senior cat properly is very important for their health and longevity. Even though your cat may have grown up on hard food, you may have to add wet food to your cat's diet. Hard food may become hard to chew and unappealing to your older cat. Switching to wet food can help your cat maintain their body weight and encourage their appetite. There are cat food brands on the market especially designed for the changing needs of senior aged cats.

Another very important part of maintaining elderly cat health is taking your feline for regular vet appointments. Your veterinarian can make sure your cat is as healthy as he or she can be. They can monitor weight gain and loss, check the teeth and eyes, make sure the vital organs are functioning properly and give you lots of advice regarding the care of your aging feline. Your older cat can be healthy and happy with the right care. Even if your cat has not reached senior age, you can start taking precautions to help your cat maintain optimal health.
