Pet Cat Care and Health Tips

Adopting a kitten or cat into your home is a joyous time. Cats make excellent pets which is why they are very popular. Cats can make themselves at home in a high rise apartment or a sprawling farm. They adapt well to life indoors and life outdoors. Like with humans, every cat has its own distinct personality. You may choose a mixed breed cat or decide upon a purebred. You will also need to decide whether you want a young kitten or an adult cat. Before you bring a new feline into your family, you should learn as much as you can about pet cat care and health.

The first thing you'll need to know is how to recognize a healthy feline. Look for a kitten or cat that looks well-fed. You don't want a malnourished animal. I know, because years ago my mother adopted a scrawny, severely malnourished kitten who unfortunately passed away only days after being adopted, despite our best efforts to save her. Ask the owner of the kitten or cat what the animal eats and how often. You will be able to tell by the build of the cat whether or not it is getting the right nutrition. The cat or kitten should have clear eyes with no discharge. Runny eyes can indicate an infection.

Once you choose your feline, make a veterinary appointment. Your kitten or cat will need all the proper vaccinations. You will also need to have your feline spayed or neutered unless you are planning on breeding. Every feline kept as a family pet should be spayed or neutered for their own health and safety. Flea control is also important. Fleas can infest your cat, and your home in no time. It is even possible for a cat with severe flea infestation to become anemic or even die. Luckily there are very effective products your vet can give you to control fleas.

Another important part of pet cat care and health is litter box training. Cats instinctively bury their waste. They will need a clean litter box to use. There are all kinds of litter choices on the market. Many people prefer the clumping kind. Others like the natural cedar. It is important to keep the litter box scooped daily and change the litter once per week. If you have multiple cats, it is ideal for each one to have their own box. If your home has multiple floors, you should provide a box on each floor. This will prevent accidents and keep your cat healthy and happy.
